Preseason Polls


| Big West Preseason Poll | Hawaii Release |

The Big West has announced the 2015 Preseason Poll with Hawaii picked to win the conference for its fourth straight season. This poll is voted by the coaches of the Big West. Hawaii received eight first place votes this year as they return twelve players and welcome four newcomers.

Behind Hawaii was Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara, and CSUN. Head Coach Dave Shoji voted for Long Beach State to win the conference as he is unable to vote for his own team.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has announced the 2015 Women's Volleyball Preseason Poll today with the Rainbow Wahine coming in ranked at #18. In the final poll of the 2014 season, Hawaii finished at #23 and have graduated three players from that team.

Other than UH, there were a few 2015 opponents that appeared in the poll. Florida (#4) and UCLA (#20) were in the Top 25 while Long Beach State (#26), Oregon State (#29), Wichita State (#39), and American (#42) received votes.

*Note: Dave Shoji has not voted in the AVCA the past few seasons, he most likely did not vote in this one as well

Wahine Open 2015 Fall Camp

The Rainbow Wahine have began fall camp today as they reported for an early 6:30 practice. Most teams around the country reported yesterday for their team meetings and August Christmas presents for the 2015 season. 15 of 16 Rainbow Wahine were here for the beginning of camp as Annie Mitchem will appear in Hawaii later this week.

A few media have reported pictures, videos, and reports of the opening practice for the Wahine so they will be posted here.

Warriors Named Preseason All-Americans


2015 Preseason All-Americans | Voting Results | Off the Block

The Warrior senior duo of Brook Sedore (Alberta, Canada) and Taylor Averill (San Jose, CA) have been voted to the 2015 Off the Block / Springbak Inc. Preseason All-American Teams. Averill, a middle blocker is on the first team while outside hitter Sedore is on the second team. Juniors Sinisa Zarkovic (Serbia) and Kolby Kanatake (Honolulu, HI) both received honorable mention.

Votes came from a nation wide selection of the media reporters and men's volleyball coaches. Teams were comprised of the top ten most voted players on the first team, next ten on the second team, and leftover votes as honorable mention. Voters selected up to 22 players for this voting.

Averill received the 6th most amount of votes with 46 and Sedore was 15th with 15 votes. Zarkovic was in a nine way tie for 41st with two votes and Kanatake was in a twenty two way tie for 50th with one vote.

Hawaii and five other schools had two players on two teams while USC and Loyola had three. Local kids Micah Christenson (Kamahemeha - USC) was named to the first team with the second most amount of votes of 52 and Jaylen Reyes (Kamehameha - BYU) was an honorable mention selection with one vote.

Last season Averill was named an AVCA First Team All-American and the first player from UH in three seasons. Sedore was named an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American in its first year naming honorable mentions for the men.

The preseason camp will begin during the winter break and the Warriors will kick off the season in 2015 season an a non-conference match against Stevens Institute of Technology on January 3rd in the Stan Sheriff Center.

Week One Recap and News

Week one of preseason practice has begun and the excitement towards the start of the season rises. Cindy Luis has kept us updated with practice reports and articles that give us some hints on who could be playing this season. Here are some notes mentioned.
  • Adolpho is now on volleyball scholarship since she is redshirting basketball this season
  • Taylor is still out for a few weeks, only doing exercises that don't involve her elbow
  • Team lifts weight after a light practice on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
  • Manu-Olevau sits out on Sunday practices still
  • Greeley sprained her ankle colliding with another player passing but she is fine now (8/11)
  • Koelsch has been mentioned several times for her good blocking
  • Magill touches around 10'5-10'7 and is very athletic and fast
  • Huff has moved to an outside hitter/opposite to add depth with Taylor out and is doing well
  • Kahakai and Mendoza doing well as liberos/defensive specialists and are the top two
  • Magill is working on serving since she didn't at Arizona
  • Koelsch is only being looked at as a setter

Hawaii in AVCA Preseason Poll

The Rainbow Wahine will open the season as the 17th Ranked team in the country according to the release of the AVCA Preseason Poll. The team ended last season ranked 18th with a 25-5 record.

Five different teams in the Top 6 received first place votes: Penn State, Texas, Stanford, USC, Wisconsin.

Opponents also ranked in the Top 25 Poll or receiving votes are Arizona State (25th), Oregon (RV-26th), UC Santa Barbara (RV-34th), UCLA (RV-T35th), Cal State Northridge (RV-37th), Long Beach State (RV-38th), and New Mexico (RV-39th).

Big West Preseason Poll

Hawaii was picked to win the Big West Conference for a third season in a row according to the Big West Preseason Poll. The Rainbow Wahine received five of the nine first place votes with two going to UC Santa Barbara, and one each to Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge.

In the Star Advertiser Article posted today, Shoji mentions that he voted for his team to win the conference because he thinks they will win.
